Reader Brain Drain: What was the worst job you have ever had?

by: Ted Levi Blackman on: February 20, 2012 under: Career & Income, Personal Finance, Reader Brain Drain

I currently work delivering pizzas at night to help pay the bills. It isn’t all that bad but it does involve some manual labor. My hands get cracked from hours of dishes, my back hurts from the heavy lifting, and I think to myself often throughout my shift how I wish I could be doing something else.  It is by far NOT the worst job ever. It could and has been much worse and so I take back anything that sounded like a complaint.

These horrible jobs (that someone has to do) always make us appreciate what we have, and the value of each little dollar we earn.  So, to get the ball rolling on this new Wealthnote feature called the Reader Brain Drain I am asking all Wealthnote readers to respond to the following question in our comment section of this post:

What was the worst, awful, no good crappy paying horrible job you have ever had the pleasure of suffering through? Please be honest and provide some juicy details.

I thought the American flag image would be appropriate since we are so jobs focused in this country. I look forward to your horrible jobs! Thanks for sharing.

  • Please refrain from naming people or company names. Don’t say I didn’t warn you :)

  • Worst job I ever had was inspecting sweat pants for defects. I did it all day long, 8 hours a day. If I found a defect I would stick a red sticker on it and put it in the defect pile. If not, hang them up and put them in boxes.

What made it so horrible was doing the same action over and over again. I need things to change up a little bit throughout the day.

  • I was a dishwasher at an old folks home for about 6 months. Lots of gross stuff stuck to dishes you had to scrub off. Would find old folks boogers they would leave on the plates.

  • Sales is pretty awful in my opinion. Maybe if you were good at it but I just can’t do it and hate trying to pressure people into buying stuff.

  • @ Justin – That sounds really gross.

@ Trent – I think it depends on what you are selling. If you are a people person and enjoy talking with folks I think it could be a rewarding job. But, if you are trying to sell a shady product or really pressure people who can’t affording it, yeah that can SUCK.
